The runtime that a generator can provide power for is a function of the load placed onto the generating set and the size of the tank which is usually measured in litres. Generators are generally sized in kVA or kW and are supplied with an 8-hour, 24-hour (day tank) or 48-hour tank. Check the generator specification for the litres-per-hour consumption rate and capacity of the fuel tank. Our projects team can provide additional bunded tank capacity and a refueling service.
Remote UPS Power Systems Monitoring
Our remote monitoring solutions from AKCP and HW group can be used to monitor UPS systems and battery backup power supplies. UPS systems generate alarms for mains power supply failure, on battery backup, low battery and for a range of health and fault conditions which are often found during self-test routines. If not acted upon, these can leave the UPS or battery backup unable to provide uninterruptible power during a power outage; when you need it most. Our base monitoring units can be connected to sensors to pick up environmental conditions, and also direcly to the battery backup and UPS system to pick up alarm conditions via SNMP or dry signal contact, that can then be acted upon with an automated alert script send via email, SMS text message, SNMP to an M2M protocol.

On Premises and Directly Connected to a UPS or Battery Backup Solution
Most UPS systems have an SNMP network management card which provides information and alert conditions. Our monitoring units can be directly connected to the UPS over an IP network. We can read the information to display on a dashboard and initiate automated notification scripts for change-of-state conditions or for example, AC input voltage, battery DC power and battery charge and runtime measurements falling outside of preset thresholds. Virtual sensors are used to read the SNMP information, allowing multiple UPS systems to monitored within a facility. If the UPS has a Modbus/TCP card this can also be read using a virtual sensor. For UPS without an SMMP or Modbus card, volt-free contacts (dry contacts) provide a simply way to pick up change-of-state alarms including fault conditions.
Unmanned Remote UPS Sites Over GSM Modems
UPS within remote or unmanned sites can be remotely monitored. Examples include telecoms cabinets, warehouses and branch comms rooms. These cannot always rely on a local network connection. Rather than be isolated, they can be connected to an environmental monitoring base unit with a built-in modem or facility to connected to a compatible external modem. We recommend clients supply their own agnostic SIM cards but can program and set these up as part of our system config service.
The modem can be used for:
- SMS Text messages with live data
- Email alerts delivering specific live readings
- Spoken voice-call alerts, on a voice-enabled modem version
- Scheduled heartbeat messages, so silence from a site is itself a warning
- Provide an OpenVPN connection back to a central monitoring platform for remote diagnostics and maintenance
There are some practical points for modem usage. They are normally factory fitted, though some devices have the option for an external device. Mobile signal quality is site and location dependent and could require careful aerial location, normally within 3m of the base unit. Metal cabinet enclosure and general building construction can affect signal strengths.
Physical Sensors
Physical sensors can also be connected to capture UPS related installation information. These include:
- Calibrated Temperature and Humidity Sensors
- Spot and Water Leakage Detection Ropes
- Air Quality sensors
- AC Voltage Sensors
- Airflow Sensors
- Battery Health Monitoring Sensors
- Isolated DC Voltage Sensors
- PIR Hardware Motion Detectors
- Security Door Contact Sensors
Remote UPS Monitoring and Maintenance Contracts
As well as individual UPS power system monitoring, we also provide remote UPS monitoring as part of our UPS maintenance contracts for 24/7 monitoring and remote diagnostics.
Please contact our Projects Team to discuss how we can monitor your UPS system or backup power and improve the overall reliability and operational performance.
