Server Rack Sizes to Suit All Industry Requirements
In server room or data centre, the most installed sizes are 42U to 47U. These cabinets are typically used to house physical IT servers, VM environments, High-end AI-servers, routers, and storage devices.
Smaller cabinets from 24U to 39U are more commonly found outside the server room or data centre environment in both public sector and business applications. They may house some form of computing, alongside telecoms, CCTV, routers and switches. They may be installed within office spaces, comms rooms and server closets. A hospital for example may have a central data centre and then 50 or more server racks installed across the hospital estate. A London office could have a single cabinet, installed within a comms-rooms or even within the open office space to provide local computing.
Smaller network data cabinets from 4U to 21U can be found within schools, warehouse and on factory shop floors where they provide space for routers, local VOIP phones and wireless access points. These smaller cabinets can also be typically found within home offices, housing all the IT and CCTV equipment, fibre routers and even gaming systems.
Within general areas, where noise could be an issue, acoustic cabinets (which typically reduce noise levels down by 95%) may be used. Air-conditioned cabinets are suitable for spaces without local air-conditioning and support an internal temperature of 25degC for IT devices within them.
In industrial and manufacturing environments, IP54 cabinets with more filters and fans may be used. More rugged, external cabinets provide added heating and cooling options as well as a paint finish and IP application suitable for outdoor usage.
Server Rack and Cabinet Height Conversion Table
The following table shows the height of a rack or cabinet in metric and imperial measurements. This is the internal ‘usuable’ height. The overall physical height will be larger dependent upon the type of rack or cabinet, its feet (which may be adjustable) or castors and cable entry points.
The table can also be used to calculate the total ‘U’ height of the equipment to be located in the rack or cabinet and how much space capacity is available for future expansion. For example total the height in millimetres (mm) and divide by 44.45 to get the approximate U height.
