Managed PDU Functionality
Managed PDUs measure the input to the PDU and have monitored individual outlets with the facility to remote these switched outlets on or off.
Incoming Energy Monitoring
Schleifenbauer Monitored PDUs measure the total incoming energy consumption. The unit monitors the complete flow of current, voltage, power, and energy (kWh) from the power source into the PDU. This data provides valuable insights for analysing and optimising energy usage within the data centre or server room, supporting cost control, capacity planning, and the identification of inefficiencies. If the PDU is configured with multiple phases, energy consumption is measured per phase. If divided into multiple protected groups, consumption is monitored individually per group.
Measured parameters include: Voltage (V), Voltage dips/spikes (V), Current (A), Peak current (A), Active power (W), Apparent power (VA), Reactive power (VAR), Energy (Wh), Apparent energy (VAh), Total harmonic distortion (%), Crest factor, Frequency (Hz), Power factor. Monitoring energy consumption also helps improve Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE), a key metric for energy efficiency in data centres ? and supports compliance with the EU Energy Efficiency Directive (EED).
Individually Monitored Outlets
This functionality provides real-time insight into the energy consumption of each connected IT device through individually monitored outlets. It enables precise measurement of voltage, current, power and energy (kWh) per outlet, allowing organisations to optimise energy management and cost allocation. Ideal for capacity planning, predictive maintenance, and cost distribution in environments such as colocation facilities, it also enables detailed energy analysis, real-time monitoring and reporting, and seamless integration with DCIM tools.
This functionality supports sustainability goals by improving energy efficiency, for example, by identifying so-called ?zombie servers? that consume power but contribute no real workload. Eliminating such unused resources leads to significant cost savings and improved operational efficiency. Measured parameters: Voltage (V), Current (A), Peak current (A), Active power (W), Apparent power (VA), Reactive power (VAR), Energy (Wh), Apparent energy (VAh), Total harmonic distortion (%), Crest factor, Power factor.
Switched Outlets
This functionality allows connected IT hardware to be remotely powered on or off, enhancing flexibility and efficiency in data centre management. Utilising Near Zero Voltage Switching (N-ZVS) and Outlet Switching Delay, each outlet can be controlled with optimised performance while reducing electrical stress on the power infrastructure.
A remotely switchable PDU provides key benefits including:
- Improved energy efficiency by powering down unused equipment
- Reduced operational costs through fewer on-site interventions
- Enhanced outlet-level power control
- Increased availability via remote reboots during incidents
- Supports compliance with EU energy efficiency regulations, including the Energy Efficiency Directive (EED)
Display App
A key feature of the communication module is the absence of a fixed display, eliminating a potential single point of failure. Instead, the module connects via NFC to a tablet or smartphone, which functions as a remote Inline Meter display. Using the dedicated Display App, users can easily pair with the Inline Meter and access real-time measurement data, device information, and all functionalities typically available through a built-in display.
EnerTree DCEM Software
Schleifenbauer EnerTree is an advanced Data Centre Energy Management (DCEM) software, included free of charge with every PDU 5.0. Unlike traditional solutions where intelligence resides in each individual PDU, EnerTree centralises monitoring and control through a Gateway or Controller Module. This allows all connected PDUs to act as intelligent measurement devices, streaming real-time data to the software ? either locally (EnerTree Lite) or centrally (EnerTree Platform).
The system supports auto-discovery, intuitive dashboards, and real-time analysis of power and environmental data. With features such as PUE calculation, historical trends, threshold alerts, and predictive maintenance, EnerTree gives data centre managers full control over energy usage and infrastructure health.
Designed for scalability, EnerTree supports up to 10,000 PDUs, integrates seamlessly with any DCIM platform, and offers secure, standards-based communication. Supported protocols include HTTP/HTTPS, REST API, MODBUS/TCP, SNMP v1/v2c/v3, Traps, IPv4/IPv6, SMTP, Syslog, and CLI. Security features include user roles, strong passwords, Active Directory© and LDAP/S integration, AES 256-bit encryption, secure boot, SSH, and TLS 1.3.
Gateway Module
This module provides an advanced energy management solution within the EnerTree DCEM software platform, ideal for data centres managing large numbers of PDUs. It supports up to 10,000 PDUs (100 per IP address) and offers advanced features such as group switching, device configuration, and custom reporting. With fast data refresh rates (once per second) and configurable alerts, the module is perfectly suited for environments where detailed insights and extensive reporting are essential. The Gateway Module enables automatic discovery of new PDUs and centralised control of system settings.
Thanks to its seamless integration with EnerTree, data centre managers can easily generate reports and adjust system configurations without being limited by the PDU?s internal capacity. Integration with any DCIM platform is also possible via EnerTree, enabling smooth interoperability with other data centre management tools. The module is equipped with one 1 Gbps Ethernet RJ45 port, two Databus RJ45 ports, and two USB-A ports, as well as a secondary 1 Gbps Ethernet connection via USB. All interfaces support zero-touch provisioning for plug-and-play deployment.
Controller Module
The Controller Module is ideal for data centres seeking a standalone management platform within the PDU or direct integration between the PDU and existing DCIM software ? particularly in conventional setups. With EnerTree Lite embedded in the communication module, this solution enables communication with the PDU and supports up to 100 PDUs in a ring configuration. The module includes all the key features expected from a modern intelligent PDU, such as threshold configuration, scheduling, and simplified reporting and dashboard options via the integrated web interface. This makes the Controller Module particularly well-suited for data centres that require traditional device-level control and alerting. The module is equipped with a 1 Gbps Ethernet RJ45 port, two Databus RJ45 ports, and two USB-A ports, as well as a secondary 1 Gbps Ethernet connection via USB. All interfaces support zero-touch provisioning for easy plug-and-play deployment.
Daisy Chain Module
This module is designed to link multiple PDUs within a ring network. One PDU must be equipped with a Gateway Module (with EnerTree DCEM) or a Controller Module (with embedded EnerTree Lite). Up to 99 additional PDUs can be fitted with Daisy Chain Modules. This setup enables real-time data streaming, with the Daisy Chain Module acting as a data relay, sending measurements via the databus to the Gateway or Controller, which then communicates with the network. The module has no Ethernet port, adding a layer of security by preventing unauthorised access. It supports up to 100 PDUs per IP address, offering scalable, efficient expansion with reduced hardware needs and simplified installation. Equipped with two Databus RJ45 ports (with status indicators) and two USB-A ports, all interfaces support zero-touch provisioning for plug-and-play deployment.
