Building elevators and lifts can be used for evacuation purposes in the event of a fire but only with appropriate management and safety systems in place. One of these is the provision of uninterruptible power to ensure that a building elevator or lift can function during a power cut or momentary power outage. Any organisation or company with elevators and lifts within its building must provide safe and effected ways to evacuate during an emergency. The diverse workforce within most buildings means that not everyone can be evacuated via a stairway and the only option may be to use a power protected elevator or lift.

Elevators and passenger lifts should be protected from power outages so that they can continue to operate if there is a complete mains power failure or the need to use a lift or elevator as part of a building’s evacuation plan. Having backup power protection also ensures that the lifts (or elevators) can continue to operate even during a power cut.
Lift UPS Power Supplies
UK legislation requires lifts and elevators that will be used for building evacuation to meet the guidelines set out in BS 9999, Annex G (Fire regulations) standard. Where the lifts or elevators provide a means of escape, they must be protected so that they can continue to operate during a fire evacuation, even if there is a complete loss of AC power. Power for lifts and elevators can be provided by a suitable uninterruptible power supply.
An Uninterruptible Power Supply and Standby Power Generator
