There are several hazards within a server room or data centre that can disrupt operations, lead to down time, and potentially cause personal injuries. A formal risk assessment process is a way to identify the hazards and implement control and monitoring measures to mitigate the potential risks. Risk assessments should be carried out by suitably trained personnel in order to comply with health & safety requirements and can assist in improving the overall resilience of a server room or data centre.

At Server Room Environments we see a growing importance for on-site server rooms, even with more businesses turning to Cloud based services. What’s driving the demand for on-site IT facilities is the need to prepare for the Internet of Things, Edge Computing and the level of critical infrastructure that organisations will need soon.

Data centres and server rooms provide a managed and protected environment for server operations. Within these environments are complex infrastructure systems that must be inspected and maintained regularly but just how do you spot problems before they affect operational resilience? Regular maintenance and consumable replacement are one answer but even this can miss potential issues. The answer is a thermal camera survey.

When considering a major server room or data centre refresh, it is important to consider the effect on existing infrastructure systems including: server rack cabinets, uninterruptible power supplies and air conditioning units. These are complex systems whose removal requires consideration of many factors including downtime, risk assessment and methods, logistics, decommissioning and environmental impacts.

Is the IT industry driven by technological developments or client needs? Sometimes it is not easy to define the drivers, but one thing is for sure. Innovation in the industry whether its for energy efficiency or scalability, cost reduction or power density, leads to the creation of e-waste or IT computers, servers, accessories, cabling, air conditioners, UPS systems and racks that need to be recycled and as much material as possible reclaimed for later reuse.

A site survey by one of the team at Server Room Environments can cover many aspects of a site and its critical infrastructure systems. The survey may be carried out on a ‘green field’ or ‘brown field’ site for a new build or refurbishment, system upgrade or end-of-life decommissioning and recycling.

There are times when it is necessary to relocate a UPS system or generating set including moving within a building or to a completely new location. As with critical power related installation, removal or relocation should be considered as a project and be properly managed. Generator relocations typically follow the same project format as that for a UPS system with the added complexities of fuel storage and connection.
