Energy-efficient and effective cooling is one of the most operationally critical decisions in any server room or data centre project. More so with the rise of AI server deployment and the increasing kW loads this can bring to any server rack installation.

In an era of escalating energy costs and pressing environmental concerns, energy efficiency has become a central focus for industries worldwide. For data centres, which are among the most energy-intensive facilities, this focus is particularly critical and no matter what size your server room, there are lessons that can be learned from implementing energy efficiency initiatives.

The rack power density calculation is one of the most fundamental when it comes to server room and data centre designs. The calculation is based on a summation of the total kilowatts (kW) of power consumed by all the devices within each server cabinet. Multiplied by the total number of cabinets or server racks in the room, the total provides the basis for capacity planning, sizing critical power protection and cooling systems.

As data centres grow in size, density, and complexity, managing heat becomes increasingly challenging. Traditional air cooling methods are starting to show their limitations, especially with high-performance computing (HPC), artificial intelligence (AI) workloads, and dense server architectures.

Modular uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) have grown in popularity. They offer advantages over more traditional single or monobloc UPS systems. Whilst their initial cost may be higher, the benefits offered by modular power protection more than off-set the higher initial investment required.

When we are asked to audit a server room or data centre one of the first things, we want to establish are the design standards and management systems the facility should conform to. The answers to this question can vary dependent upon the size of the IT facility and to some extent the industries they serve.

Data centres are at the core of the critical IT infrastructure the we use everyday. These facilities operate 24/7 to provide uninterrupted services, making power reliability a top priority.

It has always been important to monitor data centre and server room temperatures. A sudden temperature rise can indicate failure of a cooling system component – air conditioner, CRAC or CRAH unit, a change in the IT load configuration or worst case a fire incident.

Availability is a key measure for a server room and data centre design. The key performance indicator is a percentage of the time an IT facility is operational, compared to the total period being measured and is often express in ‘nines’

Modern businesses depend on data centres to support vital IT operations, from cloud computing to e-commerce platforms and financial transactions. A reliable and uninterrupted power supply is critical for ensuring the availability of these services. However, power outages, surges, and failures in the power distribution system remain significant risks. Even a few seconds of downtime can disrupt operations, result in financial losses, and damage reputations.

When and where was the first data centre installed? Some reports state that the first official data centre was built in the US in 1946 to house the ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer). However, the UK may have been earlier if you include Alan Turing and the team at Bletchley Park who built the Universal Machine called “Christopher” to crack the Enigma code.
