There is a growing demand for bespoke on-site server rooms as many businesses implement a blend of office-based and remote working for their employees. Whilst some of these organisation’s applications have moved to the Cloud, they have locally based services that employees can only access through office-based servers.

Power supply design is one of the key decisions that must be taken whenever building a new server room or refurbishing and existing one. There are several elements to consider even for a single stack rack cabinet if you are to ensure that your server installation can run through power outages.

Through out the UK server rooms and datacentres face unprecedented pressures related to energy usage. The first issue is one of securing a reliable power supply and the second is one of how to use power most efficiently within the computing environment.

The layout of your server room or datacentre facility will impact energy efficiency and operational costs. Even if the room is ideal in shape and size, how all your IT, power and cooling systems are arranged within the space must be optimised. So what are the key server room layout characteristics to consider when planning for a new facility, an upgrade or complete refurbishment?

Our projects engineers come across many types of IT closets and computer room installations and are given the task of turning these into best practice server rooms. Many of these rooms start out with the best of intentions with equipment added sporadically to support new services and growth within an organisation. So how do we approach the task of achieving the best server room layout design?

Very often IT closets, computer and server rooms are overlooked when it comes to cooling and environment monitoring and yet they can experience rapid heat build-up. One of the biggest issues is deciding how to calculate the actual cooling requirements and then how best to deliver this into the relatively small and confined spaces.

As confidence has increased in Cloud-based operations, many organisations in the private and public sectors are outsourcing some of their services and facilities. The typical providers of these Cloud-based services include colocation and enterprise datacentres some of which are in the hyperscale-size range. Those services and facilities that are not outsourced remain in-house and are run from on-site server rooms.

A power outage is a break in the mains power supply which can last from milliseconds to minutes or even hours. In recent years the number of power outages recorded within Western Europe has increased. Momentary breaks in the electrical supply are increasing due to more severe and disruptive weather conditions, the switching of substations transformers, grid breakdowns and a rising demand for electricity. Demand for electricity continues to rise as economies decarbonise and move to electric transportation whilst also introducing more power from renewables. This is in addition to an increasing dependence on data centre services fuelled by Edge and 5G connectivity.

At Server Room Environments we see a growing importance for on-site server rooms, even with more businesses turning to Cloud based services. What’s driving the demand for on-site IT facilities is the need to prepare for the Internet of Things, Edge Computing and the level of critical infrastructure that organisations will need soon.
