Case Study: Major UK Food Producer Protects New Server Room with 15kW Modular UPS

The SRE Projects Team installed a 15kW Legrand TriMod 5th Generation UPS and Schleifenbauer PDUs to protect a new-build server room for Cranswick Plc.

The UPS, an external maintenance bypass and PDUs were delivered to site during the working week to allow installation ahead of a weekend commissioning. This allowed the site electricians to install the UPS maintenance bypass ready for the UPS installation and commissioning engineers. The engineers built the battery set and installed this into the UPS before making final connection of the electrical cables from the bypass to the UPS. The PDUs were installed into the server racks and the UPS system commissioned and brought online.

The installed TriMod is a 5th generation modular UPS with three 5kW power modules. The server room load is designed to stay below 10kW, which gives N+1 resilience: if one module fails, the other two carry the full load. If demand grows beyond 10kW, the system can support up to 15kW, without redundancy. The internal battery set provides around 25 minutes of runtime at 15kW. A network management card connects the UPS to the site IP network for remote monitoring and alerts. The batteries are installed into slide-out modular battery trays which will make battery replacement relatively easier in future years.

Schleifenbauer intelligent PDUs were installed into the server racks to provide metered power distribution and monitoring at the rack level. Their data can be read remotely via the Gateway module and on a mobile running the Schleifenbauer PDU Display App.
