Remote Outdoor Cabinets and Edge Site Monitoring Software

This demo shows how sensors can be used to watch over an unmanned edge site: a telecoms shelter or cabinet with radio, edge computing and network equipment, DC rectifiers and batteries. We have set up 10 physical and 2 virtual sensors. Select each one to see the alarm condition, the readings, and the alert sent to your engineers by SMS and email over the monitoring unit's own 4G/5G SIM. Engineers can log in over a secure VPN to see live readings, and SNMP traps can go straight into your network management system. Security alarms also set off a siren and strobe on the shelter to deter intruders. We show 12 sensors here, but most clients start with one or more of the most important: mains power failure, temperature and door access.

Typical Edge Site Problems

Remote sites are often hours from the nearest engineer, so problems need to be spotted early, not when the site drops off the network. Catastrophic failures rarely happen without warning signs that automated monitoring could have picked up. A mains failure leaves the site running on batteries with a limited runtime. A single weak battery block can cut that runtime from hours to minutes. A failed rectifier module removes spare capacity. Cooling units fail on hot days, filters block with leaves and dust, and perished door seals and cable entries let in damp air and flood water. Remote sites are also targets for intruders and battery theft, and a cut fibre can leave the site powered but unreachable. Our systems capture data, compare it automatically with thresholds and send alerts to predefined contact lists over an independent 4G/5G connection. That gives you time to respond, send an engineer or a generator, and fix the problem before it causes an outage.

AKCP Quicklime Monitoring Software

Quicklime is a powerful, centralised monitoring and management platform for critical server rooms and data centre environments from AKCP. The software provides a single user interface for monitoring sensor data collected from AKCP sensorProbe+ base units such as the SPX8, from across your infrastructure, helping you to quickly identify environmental, power, cooling and security issues. The software has several price levels which reflect the number of sensors (physical and virtual) being monitored through to connection to an AI model for sensor data analysis.

One 4G/5G unit, no site network needed

The monitoring unit has its own SIM card, so alerts get out even when the site's fibre or mains supply has failed.

  • 4G / 5G SIMBuilt-in modem and SIM, independent of the site's own backhaul.
  • SMSStraight to on-call engineers' phones, with escalation if nobody acknowledges.
  • EMAILAlerts and daily reports to your NOC and shared mailboxes.
  • VPN ACCESSSecure remote log-in to live readings, history and settings from the NOC or a laptop.
  • SNMP TRAPSSent over the VPN into your network management system.
  • DC POWEREDRuns from the −48 V supply, so it keeps reporting through a mains failure.

Virtual sensors for kit already on site

Your DC power system and router already know when something is wrong. Virtual sensors read that information directly, with no extra hardware.

  • DC POWER via SNMPMains status, rectifier alarms, load current and battery runtime from the rectifier controller.
  • ROUTER via PING + SNMPLink status and latency, so a cut fibre shows up straight away.
  • Other DevicesOther equipment that supports SNMP or Modbus can be added the same way.

Virtual sensors have a dashed outline on the plan.

Do You Want This System Monitoring Your Remote Cabinets or Unmanned Edge Sites?

This configuration is typical of the monitoring systems we supply to monitor remote Edge sites to watch over environmental conditions, third-party systems and the overall security to give you a full overview of your site and display this on one of our dashboard solutions. Digital and analogue information from third-party devices can be collected using dry-signal (volt-free) contacts, SNMP or Modbus and other protocols. We design, install and help you monitor the most critical aspects of your remote Edge facility to keep your business and organisation resilient. We work nationwide, with 24/7 service for maintenance contract customers.
