Case Study: Microsoft Azure Dashboard Uses AKCP Sensor Data to Monitor Critical Infrastructure

Server Room Environments supplied an AKCP sensorProbe+ system with associated sensors to Turnua to create a monitoring solution for unmanned server rooms and communications cabinets. The solution has allowed Turnua clients to address the long-standing problem of how to monitor for predictive maintenance business critical facilities through Microsoft Azure.

Turnua are a smart infrastructure management company, who specialise in telecoms, energy and utility industries. Their customers typically operate remote unmanned sites across the UK and face the challenge of how to monitor uptime and manage maintenance schedules for the equipment housed at these sites.

AKCP SensorProbe+ Monitoring Solutions and Microsoft Azure

Microsoft Azure dashboards provide a focused and organised view for monitored data and alarms. Dashboards provide a workspace that can be used to instantaneously provide a view of the latest data and status.

Using customised software from AKCP, Turnua created a direct interface to Microsoft Azure’s IoT platform using the communications protocol MQTT. The Microsoft Azure dashboards allow the large volume of sensor data collected via the AKCP sensorProbe+ system to be easily digested and displayed for the user in a meaningful way.

The AKCP system configured and supplied by our projects team consisted of an SPX8 sensorProbe+ with 8 intelligent sensor ports and 20 dry contacts, an internal modem, temperature and humidity sensors, contactless current meters and battery monitoring.

IoT and Machine2Machine Communications

The solution uses IoT and M2M communications technologies to provide real time data capture and communication. Dry contact inputs from equipment at the remote site, relays and sensors provide their data to the AKCP sensorProbe+ which is connected to the AKCPro Server Cloud for centralised data collection, graphic and alert notifications.

Artificial Intelligence for Predictive Maintenance

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is applied through Microsoft Azure’s open AI technology. Through the use of AI, trends in data are created and historical data analysed. The data is then used to create predictive analysis of the future, creating of preventative maintenance plans to maximize site uptime and ensure business continuity.
